Set off a bit later than planned down to Pebbles to try something in the mist and rain. I'd discovered a fascinating history channel documentary about Lincoln's assasination which delayed my departure. I missed him getting shot, I knew he then died but the funniest thing and new thing I discovered was the incompetence of John Wilkes Booth and his "helpers". He not only managed to break his leg escaping from the theatre which admittely I knew, but several days later tried to escape over the Potomac into Virginia to head for the deep South where they'd never have found him, but they ended up getting lost in the dark and rowed back into Maryland! Eventually had to take a ferry which led to his capture later when the ferryman's wife grassed him to the troops and detectives that were over the place looking for him!
Left car at end of the Glen Road at the entrance to the Glensax Estate. Hadn't really planned in advance this weekend's activity, and given the weather this was an ideal "nearby" compromise where I could bail out at various points if the weather was bad or my motivation evaporated. This was a road test for the Garmin with new rechargeable batteries. Somehow slowly blundered up top and got to the day's first trigpoint at Hundlestone Heights. As normal for when I go up there I couldn't see a thing, 3rd time now. This was also the wettest it's been when I've been up there, and it's July! I kept going for a bit on the basis I could drop down into the Glensax Valley when I'd had enough for the return. Got lucky and it cleared for a bit and I could see that it wasn't much of a drop to get around and up to Dun Rig with the next trigpoint. Kept going, there were a few drops and climbs again but eventually after 7.5 hours got back to the car. Stayed high in the cooler air most of the time. The sun came out for quite a bit so I even got some exposure, arms were starting to go a little red. Garmin told me I'd done 13.5 miles, however it went mysteriously off for a bit and approx. 30 mins was missing from the total trip time measurement, so I think I did more. Should I get a refund? Batteries lasted fine, even the basic ones I used as the first 2. The other 4 I bought are better ones! Still haven't figured out exactly how to use it to it's full effect. Now I've got it, I'll probably never get lost again...
Cheers,
Stu B
